Journey into imagined utopias & exotic landscapes at the largest exhibition of Roger Dean works anywhere in the world...
Lewes-based, internationally-acclaimed artist and designer, Roger Dean, is renowned for some of the most iconic and influential images created over the past five decades. His paintings are beautiful, dramatic and highly collectible, often created for album covers, for rock legends such as Yes, Rick Wakeman. ASIA and Steve Hackett. Alongside their album covers he also designed their logos, as well as logos for Virgin Records, Tetris, Psygnosis, and many others altogether giving him a worldwide profile and following. 
 
Trading Boundaries is home to the only gallery in the world dedicated to the work of Roger Dean and is pleased to announce its Pathways exhibition from 1st November - 31st December 2020, in association with Prog magazine. 
 
Enjoy the largest ever display of rarely seen original paintings, including the featured image ‘Aglow’ recently used on the Yes 'The Royal Affair Tour - Live From Vegas' album cover, plus drawings and sketches, as well as fine art limited edition prints, shown over two floors of their newly refurbished showrooms and dedicated gallery spaces. 
 
Roger’s paintings of landscapes are famous for their original take on the natural world, often with intense colour and extraordinary rock formations. This unique vision led to a recent collaboration with Italian fashion house Maison Valentino with print and embroidered versions of his paintings incorporated by into their 2020 pret-a-porter spring/summer menswear collection, taking him into the world of fashion, in addition to music, computer games, film and architecture.

During these extraordinary times, Trading Boundaries recognises that it may be difficult to get to the show so will be offering a 360 virtual interactive tour of the exhibition that will go live on 1st November, as well as virtual events.

ABOUT ROGER DEAN
 
Although, perhaps, most widely known for his paintings, Roger trained in three dimensions becoming one of the most original and iconic designers in both two and three dimensions. Dean, born in England in 1944, is an internationally known artist and designer. After Canterbury College of Art, he attended The Royal College of Art 1965-1968 where he received a first class Masters Degree (M.Des.RCA) and a silver medal, ‘For Work of Special Distinction’.  
 
His thesis was on, The Psychology of the Built Environment, and the research for that formed the basis for his architectural designs. He has an honorary doctorate from the San Francisco Academy of Art University. In 2009 the Arts The Institute of Bournemouth conferred an Honorary Fellowship. In 2013 he received a Gold Badge of Merit from BASCA (British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors). 
 
Worldwide, about 100 million copies of Roger Dean’s images have been sold, as posters, cards, calendars, books and album covers. His work has also been exhibited around the world in many galleries and museums including, The Royal Academy, The Royal College of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum, The New York Cultural Centre, The institute of Contemporary Art London. In 2010 the Daelim Contemporary Art Museum in Seoul Korea held a major retrospective. The Victoria and Albert Museum in London have acquired a range of both his 3D and 2Dimensional works for their permanent collections. 
 
There are three volumes chronicling the Deans work: “Views” (1975) “Magnetic Storm” (1984) “Dragons Dream”2008.

 

In 1973 with his brother Martyn, they built the first of a series of revolutionary touring stages for the band YES and later others. Roger has a passionate interest in building design and in 1981 they built their first architectural prototype shown at the NEC. During the course of a several exhibitions, over 250,000 people have visited the prototype.  
Over the past decade he has also worked with his daughter Freyja on projects such as the sets and costumes for the 150th anniversary of the Puccini Festival. Roger is currently working with scientists and engineers on designing a moon base and attended the Moon Base International Summit in Hawaii in 2017.
